..and the u.s. auto making industry, and the oil industry, and the steel industry and the glass industry and the tire industry and so on.

Although U.S. autos are still not as reliable as Japanese- they've really closed the gap over the past 10 yrs, IMO. I actually bought one a couple of yrs. ago- and i've been pretty happy with it. Big variance in models however- you can't just buy anything made by, say Chrysler and say it will hold up. OTOH, you can take about any model of Toyota and expect it to be reliable..
