JW, in 1929, the FED tightened, I think. In the 1990s and this current crisis, they have let the money flow. If both options turn out to be ineffective at calming the business cycle, folks might conclude that the FED cannot accomplish this goal. They might conclude that it is better to have a gold standard, in which case the government cannot create inflation and control interest rates, and let the market control these factors.
