All good points, but think of the stable of patents Qcom has on all aspects of the technology. If there was just one key piece needed, say on the base station side, they could force either royalty concessions or a more complicated shift to less efficient methods. Look what the WCDMA camp came up with trying to skirt the Q's patents.
