The increase in use of silver for photographic applications is due to a large plant that Kodak completed recently. Kodak, of course, has a dinosaur management that is desperately looking for some way to keep on making film. They really don't have their heart into digital (I know, living across a lake from its CEO).

A $300 digital camera feeding images directly into a printer costing about $200 gives results that are better than what is obtainable from a commercial photo finisher. At lower cost than the price of the film, processing, and printing. Try it some time. You might be surprised.
