>> whatever, but free trade usually leads to economic ties <<

correct. a self-indulgent, materialistic country like the united states which pursues "free trade" so it can exploit the labor or resources of other nations will seek greater discourse in pursuance of that goal. britain practiced free trade and built an empire to support the selfish desires of its citizens, and now america has built an empire and injects itself around the world in an effort to gather resources for our self-indulgent consumer oriented society.

the trouble is, there really is no such thing as "free trade". nations are not civil toward each other and never have been since the beginning of time. they are constantly seeking to gain the upper hand, in trade as in all matters, and in the process hostilities arise. so in my view, yes free trade leads to greater discourse between nations. most liberal utopians think greater discourse between nations leads to peace and goodwill. this is naive and ignorant of history.

world trade was at unprecedented levels at the onset of world war one. did the fact that britain was germany's largest trading partner prevent war? nupe. was france one of germany's largest trading partners in the late thirties just prior to world war two? yes.

has the great push toward free trade by the united states since world war two eliminated war? go ask saddam hussein or osama bin laden. go ask madeline aintbright why we went to war in the balkans. nafta and the resulting greater trade between the united states and mexico hasn't prevented them from declaring war on america.
