Taiwan’s ChipMOS Technologies (Bermuda) Ltd. today announced plans to build a test and assembly facility in Shanghai, China. The company did not release financial details of its investment.

ChipMOS/Bermuda has signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai Qingpu Industrial Zone to build two factories in the Zone. These two factories are expected to provide complete IC back-end services, with a planned capacity of 50 million pieces per month. Full-scale production is expected to commence by the third quarter of 2005.

In addition to the assembly and test services, ChipMOS/Bermuda said it would also implement its module and sub-system manufacturing capabilities in its Shanghai base. These extra capabilities include memory modules, ASICs, liquid crystal modules (LCM), liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) microdisplays, LCD driver ICs and ink-jet print head modules.

The company said China was an important milestone as many of its customers have established, or are developing, significant operations in China.

"ChipMOS/Bermuda's investment in Shanghai will exert significant influence on the rapid development of the IC industry here," said Chen Liangyu, Mayor of Shanghai, in a statement. "Our cooperation with ChipMOS/Bermuda should provide great opportunities for both ChipMOS/Bermuda and China in the future."
