Semi Equip vendor, Ferrotec/Toshiba/Mitsui to establish silicon wafer plant in Shanghai
-- AFX - Asia, 3/27/2002

Ferrotec Corp, Toshiba Ceramics Co Ltd and Mitsui & Co
Ltd plan to invest a combined 1.2 bln yuan to build a monocrystal silicon wafer
production line in the Shanghai Baoshan Municipal Industrial Park, the Shanghai
Daily reported.

Monocrystal silicon wafer is a raw material used in the production of
integrated circuits.

"We chose Shanghai because of its cheap labour and abundant pool of talent
in the high-technology field," Toshio Mitsuno, an executive at Toshiba Ceramic,
said.

The venture partners will invest 200 mln yuan in the first phase of
construction of the plant, which will be operated by Ferrotec subsidiary Shenhe
Thermo-Magnetic Electronics Co Ltd.

In its first phase, the plant will have capacity to produce 50,000 wafers
per month.

Construction of phase one will begin next month, and the plant is scheduled
to begin operations in August.

The second phase construction, scheduled to begin in October of next year
and end in 2004, will require investment of a further 1 bln yuan, the paper
said.

This will raise the plant's monthly capacity to 400,000 wafers.

The plant will produce 6-inch wafers in its initial phase, and will
subsequently produce 8-inch wafers.

Products made at the plant will be exported to Japan, with the majority
being supplied to Toshiba Ceramics.
