SAN MATEO, Calif.—China and India are the world's fastest growing design automation markets, with 50 percent and 30 percent compound annual growth rates respectively, according to a new report by Gartner Dataquest.

Sponsored by EE Times Asia, a sister publication of EE Times, the report describes the opportunities of the Chinese and Indian markets compared with the Asia/South Pacific region's other large end market, Taiwan, and with the United States. The report can be downloaded from the EE Times Asia Web site.

China's accelerated move into the semiconductor industry since 1995 has spawned several design centers and design activity that prime the country to "soon challenge other Asia-Pacific countries for the number one position in terms of EDA market size," according to the report.

The market is currently in the process of maturing, the report states, with most engineers designing pc-boards and small ASICs, and only 11 percent of designers developing complex system-on-chip devices.

To become more competitive with designers in Taiwan and the United States, engineers in China will need to purchase the latest EDA technologies, according to the report.
