"Never Cry Wolf" was about a guy who believed that wolves ate only mice and suchlike, not caribou, and that they only killed caribou when they could get the weak and sick. It didn't mention baby caribou.

"Dances With Wolves" was about noble redmen resisting the scruffy whitemen who were needlessly killing off their buffalo for mere hides. They didn't show the part where the redmen drove buffalo over cliffs.

All of this is about opportunism. Wolves, redmen, whitemen -- no matter. We are all opportunists and we take what we can get.

I'm not a trophy hunter, and I don't believe in anybody else killing my elk for me. I don't kill theirs either. Trophy hunting has its place, but mostly it is a way for rich guys to thump their chests. The hunting laws are carefully structured to extract the most dollars of license fees from the the hunting public while thinning the herd exactly the right amount. Opportunism, pure and simple.
