That's because iPod still has limited Windows compatibility. It's a shame considering that the vast majority of personal computers are Windows machines.

Ari is just like you Don. He hasn't got a clue about what iPod's about either. iPod is Apple's reward to Mac owners. One of its main reasons for existence is to, along with the Mac's great video capabilities, make Windows dweebs jealous enough to go buy a Mac. It's obvious that the strategy works at least well enough to make the PCers jealous - I think it's selling Macs to more PCers also. Rarely has any device riled the Windows world as much as the incompatible iPod - they can't stop talking and writing about it and they are apparently drooling over it as planned.

Of course there's an argument that Apple would sell more iPods if they were for both Windows and Mac OS computers. And they would. At $400 and $500 each, with the multiple to be gained a staggering 20x, one has to take pause.

"Why?" You may ask. Apple is a profit motivated publicly traded corporation. "What are they thinking!"

First there's the technology hurdle. Apple owns the hardware AND software technology on the Mac. The iPod follows the same path to a rich user experience. Trying to duplicate that experience for the great un-iWashed involves not only bridging the Firewire gap (not insignificant since a Firewire card would have to be bundled or at least made available), but also bridging the closed proprietary Windows OS gap as well. (And the justice department is not helping anymore.)

Second, if an iPod only works on Mac, and one simply must have an iPod, buy a Mac! It's that simple. Apple wants to sell more Macs. Computers are cheaper this year than they have been in the short history of personal computers. Buy it!

I talk to people at work and ask them how many computers they have. Most of them have a computer. A few don't. Then I ask how many TVs they have. The numbers range from two to five. FIVE? The answer then comes back, "And one of them is an HDTV."

America PLEASE! If you can afford 5 TVs and an iPod, why not buy an iMac to go with your iPod?
