I believe that a strong case could be made in our country that we could go to a direct democracy right now. The people vote on every issue that comes up to be voted on. We have the highest or one of the highest literacy rates in the world. we are almost entirely wired nationally by cable. we have the computers to do it. we have the television penetration (I would say that about 99% of all families in America have TV) that everyone could watch congress all day long. we can use biometrics to identify people to assure they are who they say they are. In the end, I doubt if things would be any worse by having the people decide issues themselves, there would not be IMO any more mistakes made than that are already made. Of course that would mean the people have more power and the politicians have less, but you have to take the good with the bad.
