Well, lets face it. A watch once, was just about the only form of jewelry really acceptable for a man to wear. And Rolex placed their brand, such that it was the first (and often last) "luxury watch" people purchased. It is the watch that small business owners, middle managers, lawyers, doctors, and real estate agents often wore. It signaled that one reached a level of success that he or she could dump a couple grand on a watch. If you are "really wealthy" or "really successful", you are as likely to wear a Timex or Casio, as a Rolex.

I'd like to point out, that Bill Clinton wore a Timex (at least while running in 1992), George Bush and Al Gore wore/wear Timex watches as well.
