Barry Bonds Goes to Bat for Bay Area AIDS Foundation Until There's A Cure
Home Town's Homerun Hero Pitches `The Bracelet' On Opening Day to Raise Awareness and Funds for AIDS Education and Care Services
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 2002-- Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants' homerun king, has joined the fight against HIV/AIDS by promoting the Until There's A Cure® foundation (http://www.until.org). The single season homerun record holder, and baseball's only four-time most valuable player, is helping pitch The Bracelet(TM), the fundraising symbol of Bay Area-based Until There's A Cure, in an ongoing public service announcement campaign.

As a long-time Giant who grew up in the Bay Area, and as a homerun phenomenon with worldwide recognition, Barry Bonds' participation is a major publicity coup for Until There's A Cure. His efforts are helping the foundation's goals of reducing the HIV infection rate and finding a cure for the roughly one million U.S. residents living with HIV. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 40,000 people will become infected with HIV this year in the U.S. alone. Of these newly infected people, half are younger than 25 years of age. Sales of The Bracelet are the primary source of funding for Until There's A Cure.

Bonds Helps Get The Message to At-Risk Audience

``The youth of America continues to be at great risk from HIV/AIDS,'' explained Until There's A Cure Executive Director Jeff Cleary. ``Barry Bonds has a particular hold on that age group. There are few people who are as widely recognized and respected among young people. His participation in our program will certainly save lives and bring a cure closer to realization.''

Barry Bonds joins a long list of sports and music celebrities to support the eradication of HIV/AIDS. He joins Tony Hawk, The Rock, Destiny's Child, and Mandy Moore in Until There's A Cure's highly successful public service announcement campaign. The San Francisco Giants will continue their support with the 9th annual San Francisco Giants' ``Until There's A Cure'' Day scheduled for August 11, 2002.
