"My preference however, is to learn my trial and error in developing and testing systems"

Sounds good - I have the feeling you're on the wrong thread unless you're actually interested in trendVUE methods, Teresa Lo's trading etc. Or at least - say things that are interesting to the trendVUE people. What you're saying sort of goes against the whole point of trendVUE which is to make money in the markets by learning to control risk, understanding how markets play out etc - mostly discretionary at some level. There are techniques, yes - but there is also risk control, position sizing etc too - and those are very individual things - your computerized system could very possibly be very wrong for me because I may not be able to deal with the kinds of drawdowns you would with your timeframes.

From the strict "system" work I have done, the hard part it seems to me is to find the proper filter to keep the losers out.

However, I think that can be alleviated through money management techniques to a degree.

Good Luck to you.

It would be helpful if you found a true system trader to mentor you through the process of system development. It is not an easy task and you will, as you have noted, throw out 99 out of 100 ideas tested. You will also find systems that make money, but have internal drawdowns that are too large to stomach, and you will toss them out as well. The key is developing a system that works with you. Your requirements from an emotional standpoint.

There is a systems traders club as well....let me find the link.

traderclub.com

One thing Tom told me that in order to develop his system, he bought a bunch of other systems, and dissected them. Found out what made them tick. What worked, what did not. He took bits and pieces from several and then built his own system. Don't discount Larry Williams either. You can find something in his systems that might click for you and you adopt that method along with some other stuff and build yours from the ground up. If Larry's systems don't perform to your requirements, that does not mean all his ideas are crap as well. Take the good stuff and go from there.....

So many ideas, a good way to cull it down is to buy a dozen systems that do work (Chuck LeBeau has many) and see what you can do to tweak them or "steal" from them.
