Whoa! I am certainly no expert at this geochemical stuff:

Technically, fO2 is "Oxygen fugacity"

I think that the author was saying that the oxygen fugacity of the rutile-ilmenite pointed to an unfavourable regime for diamond formation, as fO2 of the ilmenite can be related to the position of the craton. Emphasis on "think".

It's quite "academic" at this point, isn't it? There are roughly 50 carats recovered from Freightrain so far.

Hi Frank: Relax - that was just part of a sentence from a 38-page chapter of a 6-chapter academic geologist's thesis. It shouldn't be taken out of context. There are plenty of diamonds at Freightrain.
