There were no other factors. When you vote for a state high court judge, you vote for a person you know only a little bit about, unless this particular person made the news through unusual decisions or controversial opinions. The GOP big-wigs in Texas, including GWB, thought that, for the sake of diversity, it would be nice to have a conservative Hispanic sit on the high court. The Republican bubbas in Texas threw his butt out last week in favor of some ultra-right-wing Anglo. The moral of the story is this: No wonder the Republican Party can't attract minorities.
