I am not getting the cultural benefit of protectionism. Care to elaborate? Our Founding Fathers did a great job. It was not perfect, or they would have banned slavery from the beginning, and allowed almost universal suffrage. Also, they often fought among themselves, especially Jefferson and Hamilton. But the main thing is that even if they were right 90% of the time, they were not infallible, and that many scholarly disciplines were in their infancy at the time. I would not rely on Jefferson's opinions on medicine or astrophysics, and I will not rely on Hamilton's and Clay's opinions on tariffs.........
