sylvester, RE: Q is the new kid on the block and nowhere near as good shape as the baby bells (which IMO are the real incumbents).

Uh, sylvester, Q is a baby bell. Unless somehow you think that US West has had that status revoked.

Pan Am was an Incumbent. Braniff was an incumbent. Burrroughs was an incumbent. RCA was an incumbent. Westinghouse was an incumbent. Harley Davidson was an incumbent.

The road is littered with the carcasses of incumbents. I'm not saying that vendor incumbency -in the telecom sector- will disappear, what I'm saying is:

Some vendor incumbents will have to merge to keep the incumbent label and its advantages. It is going to happen.
