re: cdma2000 1xRTT

<< 3G Today puts the number of commercial CDMA 2000 operators at 11, not 9 ... and on monday you can make that 12 with the addition of KDDI ( Japan ) >>

The abstract I used for comparison was as noted compiled in January.

With Verizon & Bell mobility launched, Western Wireless launched "Limited Commercial) and KDDI about to launch I currently tally 13 1xRTT networks launched in 7 countries.

I haven't bothered to drill down on additions or status change on GSM GPRS since EMC abstracted John Hoffman's numbers in January.

Only 98 GSM carriers had taken GPRS commercial as of end of 2001. That leaves some 300+ to upgrade over the next several years, although we'll probably see some M&A and a few that may never upgrade but I suspect that will be relatively few.

<< you might want to consider incorporating some of the information in the table at the end of this KDDI press release. They show 40 operating companies in 18 countries adopting CDMA2000, not 24 companies in 14 countries. It should be 41 since they forgot to list MetroPCS, now in commercial operation. >>

Thanks for the KDDI link.

If you don't mind, I'll hold off incorporating them in a comparative abstract until CDG shows them commercial, trialing, or implementing (preparing gear for trialing). Some of these implementations have a tendency to drag out, and John Hoffman is not attempting to track those GSM carriers that are "considering" implementing, but unlike CDG he is tracking status (commercial, trial, implementing).

KDDI's table in their release dated March 11, lists the 9 companies in 5 countries designated below by a * as having "concluded commercialization" of cdma2000 1xRTT "next-generation" services:

Asia, Pacific

- Japan -

*** KDDI (launching April 1)

- South Korea -

* KTFreetel
* LGTelecom
* SKTelecom

North America

- USA -

* LeapWireless
* MonetMobileNetworks
* VerizonWireless
** MetroPCS
** Western Wireless (Limited Commercial)

- Canada -

** Bell Mobility

Central And South America

- Brazil -

* TelespCelular/ GlobalTelecom

- Puerto Rico -

* Centennial

Europe

- Romania -

* Telemobil (Zapp)

Memo Totals: 13 carriers launched in 7 countries

The list above includes 2 additional companies in the US, and one in Canada that the CDG 3G Fact Sheet dated February 15 cites as commercially launched and I have designated those with a **.

KDDI launches next week and that is shown with a ***.

In addition to the above the CDG Fact Sheet (which pretty much matches up with KDDI's list of networks "considering commercialization or trial") lists the following 22 companies in 8 countries planning launches, and 3 additional in 3 countries trialing or intending to trial, or as KDDI would put it, "considering commercialization or trial":

That's a fast cut. I'm sure there is a mistake or two. if you catch one, feel free to point it out.

Updated 1xRTT Network Statistics 4/08/02

CDG Updated their 3G Fact Sheet April 1, 2002, before the KDDI and Cenntennial PR Launches.

Previous Update was February 15, 2002

There are some oddities.

In their listing of 1xRTT Networks, they list:

* 11 Commercial Networks
* 27 Networks Planning Commercial Launches this year
* 3 Networks Planning Trials

They have added a summary to this fact sheet:

* 13 Commercial Networks
* 15 Networks to be deployed in 2002

I can't account for the discrepancy between the networks they list with planned launch dates (27) and the 15 networks to be deployed in 2002.

In addition they don't list China Unicom. I added it.

They don't list Reliance in India (WLL). I added it.

I can't figure out Telstra Australia which has been on the list forever but still not trialing.

I tally:

* 13 Commercial Networks
* 27 Planning to Launch
* 5 Planning to Trial
* 45 Total
* 19 Countries
