The Japanese IMo would have attacked our fleet anyway, they had to. Their goals were domination and subjegation of the entire Pacific. They couldn't attack the Phillipines, Australia, NZ first, our fleet would still be intact, so...they had to take a chance and hope they could destroy it completely, giving them time to complete their plans.

Whatever the reasons that the carriers were out to sea at the time of attack were, it was a good thing they were.
