WEll very nice and what is the reason that you can not just sell enough to pay the taxes due? The cost basis on the remaining shares is not an issue. Or conversely sell all the stock pay the taxes due and then rebuy the stock with the after tax proceeds...which is exactly what you would do if you really believed the stock was going up..correct?

But the real question is: why exercise now? Why not wait for gold to go up more, then exercise? There's no tax liability until you exercise - so why do it now?

The only reasons to exercise now are: 1) The options are expiring soon. 2) You want to hold the common for a long term cap gain. 3) You want/need the money now. 4) You think gold is at the top.
