It wasn't the case of being able to maintain it one day, and not the next day.
The decline of the British empire took over 300 years.
The British taxpayers simply couldn't afford to keep the empire together, because it was too expensive to maintain.
Lets put it this way. The British taxpayers simply ran out of cash flow.
