James Taranto of opinionjournal.com is mad because Alterman failed to include him on the kneejerk-defenders-of-Israel list:

Incompetent McCarthyism
We make no apologies for our support of Israel, which, whatever its faults, is an oasis of freedom and democracy in a desert of despotism and barbarity. Inevitably, not all our readers agree with us; we get a handful of e-mails each week accusing us of dual loyalty or worse. The other day we received a charming missive addressed to "Taranto and his Jewish masters."

So we're a bit miffed that we didn't make Eric Alterman's "enemies list"-style compilation of, as he puts it, "COLUMNISTS AND COMMENTATORS WHO CAN BE COUNTED UPON TO SUPPORT ISRAEL REFLEXIVELY AND WITHOUT QUALIFICATION." Is Alterman slighting us because he's still mad that we exposed him as a closet right-winger?

We're actually prepared to give Alterman the benefit of the doubt and assume the omission was a mere oversight. After all, this list is an incredibly sloppy piece of work. To take just the errors we found on a quick skim and those our readers pointed out to us: He lists The Wall Street Journal's editorial page as a "publication" and says Peter Kann is its editor. (In fact, Paul Gigot edits the page; Kann is CEO of Dow Jones & Co.) He classifies the New York Times and Washington Post editorial boards as "columnists." And the list includes two of our colleagues, John Fund and Peggy Noonan, who seldom if ever write about Israel.

In short, in compiling his list, Alterman fails to live up even to his usual subterranean standards. He is (to borrow a phrase from Grover Norquist) a practitioner of incompetent McCarthyism.
