Thanks - Safe mode jams at the same point but I will look for the hardware diagnostics program. Probably a bad sector somewhere. So far, ScanDisk can't get past it.

TC, the Dell Diagnostics program turned up some irreparable errors on the hard drive, so it's time to call Dell to get a new one.

What saved my bacon was a backup hard drive and Norton Ghost. I Ghost'ed my C drive to a D drive just a few days before. This morning I connected the backup drive as my primary and picked up where I left off without a hitch.

I can't recommend this solution strongly enough for the casual user who wants a quick, easy way to back up an entire drive with 100% confidence. It's a lifesaver when your main hard drive fails (and they do - this is my second in the past five years, first one was in a Gateway PC).
