Yes, it's regional. Certain areas still have a somewhat "frontier" attitude towards life.

Although, if the deer herd has grown so large it's over-running crops the farmer needs for survival, it is probably necessary. Evidently, the carnage is taking a serious toll--just recently hunters here were directed to target only the oldest deer....identified by their antlers.... in order to give the herd time to grow.

It is an inherited activity. My grandfather hunted with his sons at 80 yrs old. My father never hunted because it was not a family tradition.
