Deer will die from starvation if the herd is not managed. They'll also damage crops and wreck your car.;)

While it might be esthetically pleasing to have a non-hunting country the resultant starving and diseased animals would not.

This is not to say that many hunters are more dangerous to each other than they are to the deer.

LOL!! Got to love you people.

When you don't like something all you can think about is taking other's freedoms away from them.

Isn't it you that wants to ban racing also?

Jack rabbits attack walkers in Sonoma County; man bitten,
woman forced to evade jack rabbit

- (Published March 29, 2002)

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - Sonoma County musician Doug Bowes will remember this Easter season
as the one where he happened upon the Easter Bunny, and it attacked him.

Bowes was walking near his home at about 11 a.m. Wednesday when the attack occurred. A small,
gray jack rabbit bounded toward him from a nearby fence.

"I thought, 'Gosh, this is somebody's pet,' " Bowes said. He put his hand down in a friendly gesture
and the bunny lunged and bit him.

Bowes began to walk home, nursing a sore hand with broken skin, but the rabbit followed him. A
short time later, a nearby neighbor had to retreat up a hill after another aggressive jack rabbit
forced her back.

Bowes had to get rabies shots and faces five additional vaccinations, though area health officials
say it would be rare if the animal had rabies.

"If it were (rabid) it would make history," said David Yong, director of laboratory services for the
county public health division. No rabbit has tested positive for rabies in Sonoma County in the past
16 years, Yang said.

Defending ones self against dangerous rabbits and pigeons is part of the NRA statistics that say guns are used millions of times per year in self defense.....

<<When grown men hunt down timid deer >>

I don't know what it's like in your world but when there isn't enough hunting to keep the deer herds in check the state gives out free nuisance permits that allows the landowner to kill 25 deer. You can get two of those before needing an inspection to see if the damage warrants more permits.

It also removes most all of the restrictions on hunting them. Unlike when they are hunted and the meat is eaten, all the deer killed with a nuisance permit must be buried.

Hunting bears, mountain lions, even elk is a fairer fight so to speak. When grown men hunt down timid deer & massacre pigeons with rifles.... then try to pretend it's a sport.....it's downright pitiful.

Ann...

Although I think I can relate to your position on hunting I have a few problems with your reasoning.

Just so you know - I am not a hunter.

I think the concept of a "fairer fight" in relation to hunting is absurd. Hunting is not like a boxing match. Hunters are not out to see if the man or the pigeon is the last to live. An argument based on this flawed reduction is VERY weak.

I think you are having a problem with the idea of someone killing a "timid" (or any other soft adjective) deer for sport. Well.. there are problems there too...

First of all many hunters eat what they kill. Are you a vegetarian? Do you realize that you pay money for the meat that you eat, and this money is paid to people to do the raising and slaughtering of animals FOR you. And it is easily argued that the conditions under which a Tyson chicken is raised (FOR YOU) are far less humane than the natural life of wild game like duck.

Maybe you are a vegetarian... or you just object to hunting 'purely for sport'. Well let's define 'sport' in this sense to be 'enjoyment'.

Let's look at a few questions:

1. Do you wear makeup for enjoyment?
2. Do you drive a car?
3. Do you fly on planes?
4. Do you take medicine?
5. Do you own furniture?

There are many more questions to ask along these lines.

Here is an abridged list of things we all use that are made at the DIRECT expense of the lives of 'cute' animals:

Tires, Buttons, Baseballs, Footballs, Surgical sutures, Matches,China, Soaps, Photographic film, Cosmetics, Brushes, Perfume, Shaving cream, Paints, Candles, Crayon/Chalk, Toothpaste, Deodorants, Mouthwash, Paper, Fabric printing/dying, Upholstery, Paints, Floor waxes, Glass, Glue, Water Filters, Rubber, Fertilizer, Antifreeze, Ceramics, Insecticides, Insulation, Linoleum, Plastic, Textiles, Blood factors, Collagen, Glucagon, Heparin, Insulin, Pancreatin, Thrombin, Vasopressin, Vitamin B-12, Asphalt, auto and jet lubricants, outboard engine oil, high-performance greases, brake fluid ... and so on... and so on...

aif.org

Do you really believe that the industry that kills animals to produce these things does so in a humane way? I can tell you that compared to the ways these animals are killed - a pigeon shot with a shotgun might be lucky.

So... now the difference between you and the hunter is only that he has made the conscious choice to kill for his pleasure or needs wheras you have not. Also he does his own killing for himself in the open while you hire others to do it for you in a way that you can live without seeing the needless death you have caused.

Now... let me clarify another couple points before you rip me a new one.

I am not qa vegitarian, nor am I an animal rights activist. In fact I would use this same argument against them insofar as it would enlighten them as to the effect of their lives.

But I am also not trying to indict you for your lifestyle. First of all I do not know that you are not a vegan who farms their own food without pesticides, does not use a car or public transportation... only wears clothes made from plant fiber (raised also without pesticides farm machinery), wears no makeup, uses no products that are tested on animals and so on...

And even if you, like me, are a meat eating modern American citizen with a car and all the rest ... I still see nothing wrong with this if you have taken into consideration the ramifications of your choices.

Frankly I don't see too much problem even if you haven't considered the life-price of your lifestyle...

unless...

As someone who does not think about the (often senseless) death their own life causes on a daily basis for both food and convenience you label a hunter as barbaric.

Think about it for a while before you decide to go cAPSLOCK hunting. ;)

without malice,
