genetic drift has a lot to do with natural selection
That is the theory of punctuated equilibrium as taught by Stephen Gould. Creatures drift around a common point, adapting until they reach a plateu, not of perfection, but of good enough. There is enough similarily that it doesn't matter that the fittest be the one to breed, only that the most unfit are usually culled from the group. This is equilibrium.

It is only when conditions change, and change severely that a species begins to change. Then luck and skill and innovation determine whether the species survives, becomes a new species, or goes extinct. This is the punctuation.
