10 dead in attack on Hindu temple

At least 10 people have been killed when suspected Islamic militants attacked a 150-year-old Hindu temple in Jammu-Kashmir state.

Four policemen, four civilians and two suspected militants were killed, says a police officer.

Another 20 people, mostly civilians, were wounded in the attack.

Police are searching for another suspected militant who had driven the attackers in a van to the temple.

Two attackers left the white van outside the temple in a crowded shopping district in Jammu and set off several grenades, the officer says.

One of them entered the temple, where he held a shootout with security forces and was later found dead.

Another militant was killed before he could enter the shrine.

The army arrived shortly after the attack and cordoned off the temple area.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

More than a dozen Islamic militant groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India since 1989. India accuses the Pakistani government of arming and training Pakistan-based militants, who carry out attacks in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir in a bid to win its independence or merger with Pakistan. The Pakistan governments supports the cause morally, but denies helping the militants.
