Fyo,

Re: "Is AMD worse off with UMC as a process development partner than they were
(are) with Motorola?"

I think you know my thoughts on Motorolo ... I have personally visited
Motorolo in Austin and reviewed their HiP7 process. These guys are
not in the same league as INTC OR IBM OR UMC OR TSMC. Their yield/defect
density expectations are "way behind" state-of-the-art. I said so
at the time AND I think it is a good thing that AMD is not counting on
them. UMC on the other hand does not have experience in MPU process
development. They are an ASIC process developer. The key differences being:

MPU process - High performance FET's, backend low R/C
ASIC process - Low leakage/lower performance FET's, backend high density

The best option for AMD would be to partner with IBM ... IBM has
MPU process development history, and very good technology. IBM is
however somewhat weak on manufacturing. Maybe the AMD/UMC venture will work,
but I would watch it very closely.

Make It So,
Yousef
