Yes, hydrogen will do the same trick. As hydrogen and helium are both very light gases, the voice chords in an inhaler's voice box will vibrate at a higher frequency. Hence the cause of the high-pitched voice.

Believe it or not, this happened:-

A science teacher entertained his class by making his students inhale helium from a helium tank. The usual precautions were taken. The students breathed the gas from a gas mask and then had lots of fun speaking to each other sounding "like chipmunks". A kid used his cell phone to tell his absent buddy about the fun he was missing. Not wishing to miss the fun his buddies have had, that absent student showed up after recess and went straight to the helium tank. He was apparently so excited that he didn't wait or bother to ask for help. He donned the mask and turned on the gas. But it was too much pressure for him. He died of internal bleeding due to rupture of his lungs.

while looking for that link, I first came upon this:
A FABLE...

It was one of those days when God was creating the earth. He was working on Texas as darkness fell at the end of the day, and He had to quit.

He gave the Great Plains of West Texas a smoothing stroke and said to Himself, “In the morning I’ll come back and make it pretty like the rest of the world, with lakes and streams and mountains and trees.”

But the next morning when He returned, it had hardened like concrete overnight. As He thought about having to tear it all down and make it over, He had a happy thought: “I know what I’ll do”, He said, “I’ll just make some people who like it this way.”

And that is how it came about that the people who live in the Panhandle like it this way.
