I don't think Arafat will "off" himself.

It would be a rather ignominous end for a man who perceives himself as the father of the proposed Palestinian State.

And the fact that the Israelis are still permitting him to conduct interviews and have some limited contact with the outside world, indicates that they are want him to have such access, so long as he says what the Israelis (and George Bush) have been waiting for him to say, irrevocably and in Arabic...

"I am calling for an unconditional end of the Intifada and ordering ALL GROUPS to cease hostile activities against the State of Israel. I am also ordering all PA security elements to arrest and hold all members of extremist groups on the West Bank and Gaza. The PA will, from now on, implement unconditionally the conditions of the Mitchell plan in order to achieve a Palestinian State."

That's what the Israelis want him to say. What we have to see now is whether hunger and fatigue will bring him psychologically to make such an announcement... again.. IN ARABIC.

Were I the Israelis, I would make such a statement from him made in Arabic, the primary condition for the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

And if Arafat does kill himself, then so be it. The Israelis will have free rein to proceed as they see fit (within some bounds).. If only under the premise of preventing total chaos in the PA territories.

After all, if Arafat is dead, who will pay his security forces?
