Dan
That is not clear why, IMHO. You have suggested one likely explanation about some high expectations but there are more than one explanation for any given pattern.
I tend to ignore insiders selling unless they are really out of ordinary and I do not see them as such yet

Dan3,

Re: "It would appear that AMD insiders think they'll be able to get a better
price for their options, soon, so they're waiting."

Could it be that recent options are "underwater" ??!! <ggg>

Make It So,

Dan3:

"So why are the AMD insiders holding on to their options, as though they expected a big run up in the stock soon?"

Seems Hammer completes the reversal of fortunes from 3 years ago, pre-Athy when AMD could compete in only the lower half of the performance ranges...Athy has allowed them to compete across all performance ranges...and it sounds like INTC may be competitive in only the lower half once Hammer is unveiled...My how the once mighty INTC has been humbled...

"And why are so many Intel insiders exercising their options now, instead of waiting for the traditional summer rally?"

Just no buffers left now that the FY00 capital gains pool of $5 billion has been exhausted in propping up the anaemic p4...Maybe they don't knoe either, where they're going to hide that $5 billion in goodwill that has to be addressed this quarter...Not gonna be a pretty quarter at INTC with all that goodwill that has to be written off???
