Personally I'd do anything I could to make sure my baby was as healthy and fully-functioning as possible, but I understand there is a deaf culture with a strong sense of identity.

I've tried on several occasions to get my head around their attitude. I can understand finding compensations in being deaf. In being content to be deaf. In not feeling "handicapped." In opposing cochlear implants. No matter how hard I try, though, I cannot imagine going out of their way to produce a child who does not have the full spectrum of opportunities available in the world.
