I would think that some of the companies that bought in 2001 ie: PWI will have to restate the value of these investments when they put out their annual financials but the key to the value an analyst or investor will give to it is the estimated life of the asset and return it will provide. I personally believe a lot of companies probably do not go out of their way to reduce te reserve life if they can get away with it.

Re the dividend play on trusts and others you might want to take a look at iva.pr.i. I was quite lucky doing what you describe with this preferred over the past several years. I hold a core position and watch it especially in the month before the dividend is due. I find that you can buy it at .25-.50 below the trading range then sell on the x dividend date collecting the dividend and a run up in the stock price. I don't know why but it always seems that you can sell the stock for about the same as it traded at before the x-dividend date. Check it out.

Hi Lorne,
Interesting to note that the highest price paid by a trust for an acquisition was PWI for Cypress at $20.09 and $52,529! Great! reserve write downs. As if debt and crappy hedges aren't enough to worry about :o(

But thanks anyway for the reminder about possible reserve write downs. More work for the over worked.

regards
Kastel
