Israeli Army Enters Qalqilya in West Bank
Sun Mar 31, 3:30 PM ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli tanks rolled into the
West Bank town of Qalqilya Sunday, Palestinian
security sources and residents said, two days after
storming into Ramallah and laying siege to Yasser
Arafat (news - web sites)'s headquarters there.

Palestinians said about 100 tanks
and other armored vehicles entered
the town from four directions and
were close to the city center.
Residents said they could hear
explosions from occasional shelling
and heavy machinegun fire.

Resident said electricity was cut off
to the town, located in the
northwestern part of the West Bank
on the "green line" border with
Israel.

The incursion came hours after
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
accused Arafat,
the Palestinian president, of
leading a campaign of "terror"
against Israel and saying the
government would wage an
"uncompromising war" to crush it.

An Israeli army spokesman declined to confirm or
deny the reports about Qalqilya, saying the army did
not discuss details of operational moves. But an Israeli
security source said an incursion into Qalqilya had
been planned for Sunday evening.
