Those accords are worth exactly the value of the paper they are written on, since Arafat was completely unwilling to fulfill his end of the bargain.

If he won't comply with the terms (ie: eradicating terrorist groups operating within the PA and eanding the violence), then why should Israel cease its settlement activities (which they essentially did anyway)??

Israeli settlements, many prominently located on the high ground within the West Bank, are considered essential "islands" of control and resistance, designed to slow any potential invasion of Israel from Jordan (which is still at least 70% Palestinian and a potential threat).

And besides, under the British Mandate, Jews were directly permitted to settle and develop uninhabited areas of the Mandate, something which was denied to them with the creation of the Kingdom of Jordan, as well as the annexation by Jordan, of the West Bank in 1948.

The bottom line is that the British made a bunch of promises after defeating the Turks, seeking to reward the various entities that contributed to that defeat. And many of those promises were contradictory to one another, which has led many to justify their current agendas.

Ultimately, I see Jordan essentially becoming the Palestinian state, with the Hashemite regime falling or essentially becoming puppets.

And that's the fear of Saudi Arabia, imo. If the Hashemites, who are direct descendants of Muhammed, can be overthrown, what chance to they have??
