I do realize the legacy of certain religious thinking was the burning of
hapless witches at stakes, and rackings during the Inquisition.
The earth was supposed to be centre of the universe,
until Copernicus said, no, the earth revolves around the sun.
This made fools of the Church hierarchy,
and took away their power, and their financial control
of the faithful.

Is it that much different today?

I agree Buddism is the most useful. But Asians do dwell on the future
lives (reincaration) and worshipping past relatives.
