Singapore's number two cellular phone company MobileOne (M1) has announced a 64 percent rise in pre-tax profit to S$131 million (US$72 million) in 2001.
M1's sales in 2001 soared 13 percent to S$639 million.

The telco has grabbed more than one million customers and 35 percent of the market since its launch in 1997.

M1 chief executive Neil Montefiore said in a statement that despite stiff competition and the weak economic environment in 2001, the company was able to capitalise on its strengths in customer service, branding, marketing and network management.

The other players in the market include SingTel, the dominant player in the telecommunications market, and Starhub and Virgin Mobile.

M1 also offers international direct dialing and paging services.
