If the estimate is right, Korea added 330,000 subs this month. A pretty good month....and it would make for a great overall quarter.

Mobile Phone Subscribers Exceed 30 Million

By Kim Deok-hyun
Staff Reporter

The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) said yesterday that more than 30 million people were estimated to be using mobile phones at the end of March.

``Since the first introduction of wireless phones in 1984, the mobile phone population has exceeded 30 million in just 18 years,'' the MIC said.

The data showed that the domestic mobile population represents a 63.8 percent penetration rate of users in the nation.

According to the data, the number of wireless phone subscribers topped five million in September of 1997, and doubled to 10 million in just nine months. The figure doubled again to 20 million in 14 months, by August of 1998.

The MIC predicted domestic wireless subscribers would only add three million new customers by the end of 2002.

However, the MIC said the number of domestic wireless subscribers would hit 42 million by 2005, on the back of a proliferation in mobile commerce and personal digital assistants and a variety of other mobile gadgets.

In terms of the number of mobile phone users, South Korea ranks eighth in the world, and listed 22nd place in terms of penetration rate, the MIC said.

The mobile phone population surpassed the number of fixed-line phone users in 1999, the data said.

Last year, sales in the mobile phone services sector topped a record high of 12.67 trillion won, compared with 4.3 trillion generated in fixed-line services, it added.
