Ali, Re: ""There's not much of a point in launching TBred if it clocks 1.5-1.7GHz, is there?"

1.8A Northwoods while regular P4 were up to 2.0.
You even have bought the 1.8A yourself, didn't you?"

According to some rumors, the "eventual" Thoroughbred launch is supposed to include two lower bin models. I believe the launch speed was supposed to be 1.93GHz, but there would also be a 1.8GHz and 1.67GHz (2400+, 2200+, and 2000+). This is similar to Intel's launch of the Northwood core, with 2.2GHz and 2.0GHz, but also some downbinned 1.8GHz and 1.6GHz chips.

Intel no doubt was pushing their .18u process pretty hard. We know for sure that the 2.0GHz Willamette was very low volume, but it could be that even the 1.8GHz was binning much less than 50%. Since those speeds are slowly transitioning to high volume, Intel probably thought that higher binning Northwood parts could help meet demand.

This can probably also work for AMD, if they launch the 1.93GHz, 1.8GHz, and 1.67GHz chips that were rumored. However, if Thoroughbred doesn't meet the minimum requirement of, say, 1.8GHz, then launching below that could be a marketing nightmare. I'm not saying that this is the case, though. It's just a theory.

P.S. Plus, the 1.8GHz Northwood core that I bought had the benefit of extra cache for better performance. It's those incentives that can sometimes make the sale for people like me.
