Absolutely correct. The way it can happen, tho', is a breakthrough commercialization of methyl hydrates, or some such alternative if developed such that smaller producers can get into it, and shove it into the eye of the big gov't/industrial cartel. Also, more technical things like hybrid cars or more efficient combustion after-market add-ons. Then again, as you pointed out, a doubling or tripling of gasoline prices would do the trick, creating massive short-term wealth for the Big Oil/Big Government Parasites, but creating opportunities for rapid change in usage techniques and behaviors.
