>Dilip Kumar and Narges were also the greatest legends. that does not say much about pluralism>

Maybe not. But I can use your own example. Dilip Kumar and Nargis started acting in films in the pre-partition days. You may remember that Dilip Kumar's real name is Yusuf Khan. But he chnaged it to Dilip Kumar to fit in. Nargis did not mention her last name. Meena Kumari hid her Muslim name.

Not today's stars. They have not changed their real names to fit in, although in Hindi movies they typically have names like "Vikas Malhotra", a north Indian Hindu name. Obviously today's Muslim actors have a stronger sense of identity. And it also indicates the tolerance of the society.

You must have watched the Oscars this year. Two African-American actors won the Academy awards for Best Actor categories. Leaving their individual abilities aside, does it not speak of the change in the attitudes of the American Public that it is no big deal anymore.

By the way. I assume that you are in Pakistan? You are up really early.

>I look back at my life and thank 1 million times for the partition of 1947 for 1 simple reason. India would not have been such a peaceful place with all these extremists around. India would not have been able to handle like recently in Gujarat>

You know that India has had its share of extremists. Punjab, Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam, Uttarchal, Darjeeling, and Kashmir. They have all had their share of extremist activities. Naxalite movements in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Kerela. We also have the Shiv Sena, which may be considered extremists.

Indians just shrug and go on. India is not all that peaceful a place. However, democracy does offer some oulet for the revolts that are seething below.

Well said.

>I understand our shortcomings and I have condemned my nation more than India and that’s the strength I bring to the IDEA thread since I have no fixation with the so-called false strength of my nation. I see the poverty, misery, human insult and the lack of education, which makes me feel that the pride we take in our nationalistic attitudes, is not something tenable. We should only be proud if we make our nations worthy of respect. If we can improve the lot of our poor and remove the caste system, bring equality and egalitarian values as Western democracy's have done then we can stand >
