That's what I said J.F. All 3 nightime talkshow hosts are intelligent guys. Conan O'Brien is the sharpest tack of the three. When he first started, he had topical, current events type jokes....really funny stuff but the audience sat & stared at him; so, now he acts like a circus clown for the first 5 min. of the show & the audience loves it.

Both Leno & Letterman, kept their monologues clean but hilarious until the last couple yrs. Then I noticed they started to use bathroom humor more.....now it's almost constant. Letterman in particular still slips something political in.....and usually comments afterward "I knew that one was a mistake." They gauge what gets the biggest laughs every night & provide more of the same. The news media had the same strategy until Sept 11. Every show talked about Gary Condit or Pres Clinton & Monica. Whenever they were questioned about their subject matter they replied "we provide what the audience wants to see. If we reported on world events, we would have a very small audience."
Then the public was shocked into the realization that there are actually other parts to the world other than the USA.
It was almost worth it to finally here interesting, relevant news reports.(just kidding)
