<<Peoplesoft Warns, Dragging Down Sector

Peoplesoft (PSFT:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) was plunging and dragging down the rest of the business software sector after warning of a shortfall in profit and licensing revenue due to tight information technology spending.

Pleasanton, Calif.,-based Peoplesoft expects to earn 14 cents from recurring operations and post licensing revenue of $130 million to $135 million in the first quarter ended March 31. The earnings guidance is in line with the company's own forecast but 1 cent below what analysts were expecting. The company had previously forecast licensing revenue of $160 million.

"Although consulting revenue and maintenance revenue were on plan, and earnings per share are expected to meet our original guidance, license revenue clearly reflected a cautious economic environment,'' the company said in a release. "We remain confident that our industry leading PeopleSoft 8 pure internet enterprise applications will drive continued overall growth in 2002.'' >>
