Soma uses distributed computing tuned for fixed and IP

The San Francisco-based company signed a multi-million dollar royalty bearing agreement with Qualcomm in order to make use of the superior technical characteristics of CDMA algorithms in its air interface.

The SOMA solution uses distributed computing and QoS-enabled IP to deliver voice and multi-megabit data services to residential and small office users. The end user equipment can, the company claims, be installed by the end user with no truck roll required from carriers.

"Our version of CDMA is unique in that it's tuned for fixed and IP, rather than applying mobility voice technology the way that IS-95 (cellular CDMA) and 3G do. We get a total of approximately 20 times performance increase for real-world loads, using a variety of techniques, where performance is defined as bookable revenue per sector," wrote Martin Snelgrove, cofounder and senior vice president for product strategy.

This may be only a potential royalty income stream. Q chips built for mobility and voice may be over-kill for a fixed IP solution.
