Vlad "the Impaler," a.k.a., Dracula, did not have precision-guided munitions and the means to deliver them. Nevertheless, the author has a point. Had the Allies not massively and, yes, quite cruelly retaliated against Germany and Japan, I wonder if the "berserker rage" (see 19th-century Germanic poetry, which foretold of the "German thunderclap") incited in these peoples by their leaders would have been extinguished, and these great nations brought back into the fold of advanced civilization.

The Islamists seem to have gone quite completely berserk as well. Perhaps targeted military might will not be enough, and a massive pounding will have to be administered before they come to their sense. Whatever the case, the choice at this point is still theirs to make. I do believe that if this terror continues western fury will grow day by day until the point where the realization will come that only a catastrophic blow against the fanatics will get the message across. We aren't there yet, thank God, but the day is approaching. I believe President Bush's Nuclear Posture Review, the fact that this was leaked to the world media, is making clear just what America is prepared to do if it becomes necessary.
