From Thomas Sutton, at rightline.net:

"According to Bob Pisani of CNBC, approximately 4000 'semi pros' make up 83% of the total daily online trading volume, and trade an average of 50 times each session. The point here is that these high-volume shakers and movers do influence the intra-day market, and apparently tend not to look beyond the nearest horizon of a few hours. Their days are spent banging into support and resistance levels to see what, if anything, gives. And after reading the strength of these pivotal areas, quick decisions lead to either holding onto positions, or reversing in time to head in the other direction. In one sense they play the role of market 'scouts' who push and pull at any possible weakness to find which direction prices are willing to go. They provide the "oil" that lubricates the market machine, and constantly create momentum even when other less-active groups are sitting on the sidelines."
