I too suggested that you short if your convictions were that it would go lower, but you seemed to have valid reasons (fear of volatility) for not doing so. Indeed it was not until 9 months later (post 9-11) that those Dec '01 lows were finally penetrated. Even so, AMAT only got down about 20% from the '01 low, while it comfortably traded about 65% above that $34 level last spring. I think you showed admirable forbearance and that most shorts probably covered at losses in last April's big run-up from 37 to 59 in the course of a week. For some reason I do not yet fully comprehend, few people seem to be comfortable holding shorts positions for extended periods of time. If anyone can explain the reason for this asymmetry, I would appreciate it.
