......... wonder why the PLO needs to spread such lies

The reason is pretty obvious (not that you didn't know it). There are few images more evocative in the West than a priest shot by dastardly Jews and bleeding to death in the streets of Bethlehem (Bethlehem!) while the Jews don't even let the amublance through.

Powell is sounding more and more surreal. This is from an interview now on CNN.com:

ZAHN: Secretary Powell, do you think it was helpful that Sharon offered, once again, Arafat exile? Is that going to move the two sides any closer to the peace table?

POWELL: Oh, I don't think it will have any effect one way or the other. Chairman Arafat is head of the Palestinian Authority, and he is recognized -- whether you approve of it or not -- as the leader of the Palestinian people. And he will be the leader of the Palestinian people whether he is sitting in Ramallah or whether he is sitting in some exile location elsewhere in the Middle East or somewhere in Europe. He will still have that role.

So it seems to me let's deal with him where he is and let's continue to apply pressure to him and other leaders of the Palestinian people to get into the Tenet work plan.

Sure, Arafat is beseiged in Ramallah, sitting among his paid invoices for Al Aqsa explosives and counterfeit shekels and dollars, but he's still the recognized leader of the Palestinians, gotta get him to work on Tenet. Say what? We have hardly been treating him like a dignified head of state lately. Just give him his martyrdom, he'll be much less trouble that way. The Arabs say all hell will break lose? Ok, just what do you think they are currently holding in reserve?
