True, few go out of their way to be hostile. True also, one might, as a professor, leave one's beliefs at home. At St. John's, although it is secular, the approach takes into account not only Plato and Aristotle, but Marx and Nietzsche, and it also includes some discussion of the Bible and of Medieval texts during sophomore year. In that environment, it was not unusual for people to lay their cards on the table, more or less, even faculty members. Tolerance and respect were promoted thereby.......
